General Chit Chat:: Binding of Little ones and Big ones
Big Brothers Big Sisters is an institution in Ellis County which caters to needs of children who live in single parent homes, grow up in poverty and are in need of help. This institution tries to find a match between a Big and a Little. To make the matches and perform the background work involved with them requires donation. They also offer a wide variety of programs which pair children between ages of 6 and 18. This ties them up in a one to one relationship.

This institution has rapidly grown in the last two years. Now they serve double the children compared to those served in 2009. There are a number of children who are waiting to be served by them. As many as 110 children are waiting to obtain guidance from a particular mentor. Big Brothers Big Sisters can be funded by large companies by providing ads to reach out to volunteers. These ads directly impact the lives of the children by providing them with a volunteer. The children in the waiting list are benefitted the most. One such company that has provided a full page recruitment ad is Victron Energy headed by Ali Sharaf, the company’s President and CEO.

Big Brothers Big Sisters have a number of programs like African-American Mentoring, Hispanic Mentoring, Native American Mentoring, Mentoring Military Children and Amachi Program. Before matching a Big and a Little, the institution does a little study. Before a person becomes a Big, he has to undergo an extensive background check and a careful interview process. Then the Bigs and the Little ones are matched depending on the location, personality and preferences. A thorough study is made before matching so that the relationship grows into a long lasting friendship.

Happenings:: 13th Annual Buu Mon Buddhist Temple Garden Tour

13th Annual Buu Mon Buddhist Temple Garden Tour
and Vesak Celebration (Buddha’s Birthday)

Date: Saturday June 4th – Sunday June 5th, 2011 9:30 am – 5:00pm

Come enjoy a free family fun weekend at the 13th Annual Buu Mon Buddhist Temple Garden Festival and explore the new Zen meditation garden, koi ponds, rose gardens and temple renovations.

The two-day event will feature members of the Texas Bamboo Society sharing their knowledge of the appreciation, use, and availability of bamboo in our area. Sales of a variety of bamboo plants, products and related wares will be available for purchase.

Arts and crafts and a variety of food will be available for purchase during both days of the festival.

On Saturday June 4th, from 9:30am to 5:00pm, the gardens will be open and plants may be purchased from the Texas Bamboo Society as well as other booths with arts, crafts and books from various vendors. A unique array of foods may be purchased and there will be cultural entertainment throughout the day.

On Sunday June 5th, from 9:30am to 5:00pm, the gardens will be open and the day will feature the Buddha’s birthday celebration (Vesak) beginning at 10:00 am in the main Buddha hall. A traditional Vietnamese vegetarian lunch will be offered following the celebration inside the Lotus hall.

Guided garden tours will be offered throughout both festival days as well as the very popular tea preparation lecture by Reverend Bhante Kassapa. Bring your cameras.

Free Admission and open to the general public, donations accepted.

Lost & Found Birds:: Found 4/13/2011 in Groves
I've been contacted by a lady in Groves, she has found a Green Parakeet with a band on it's leg. If you can identify the Parakeet please call me and I'll give you the number to contact her.

Also her friend has found a White Dove, the Dove does not seem able to fly, so they are not sure how it ended up in her backyard. Again, please contact me and I'll give you the number to contact the person.
